A thick, easy-grip 16 ply wool yarn for weaving, finger-knitting, knitting and crochet, ideal for children learning a new craft as well as more experienced makers. It's 100% Perendale wool, Australian and New Zealand grown, hand-dyed in small batches in NSW by Mollydale Yarns.

  • 100% Perendale wool, non-mulesed
  • Australian and New Zealand wool, hand-dyed in NSW
  • Approximately 50g and 33 metres per ball
  • Suited to weaving, finger-knitting, knitting and crochet
  • Colour may vary slightly between batches, as each is hand-dyed.

Also available in our rainbow multi-coloured yarn, for a more playful, variegated look.

This yarn comes from Mollydale Yarns, a mother-and-daughter business in country NSW who've supplied Perendale wool to Steiner schools across Australia for 16 years. Perendale sheep are naturally resistant to flystrike, so the wool is non-mulesed by nature, and every skein is dyed by hand and dried outdoors in dappled shade to keep the colour rich and the wool soft.

FAQs

Is this yarn itchy or scratchy?
It's 100% pure wool, so it has a slightly coarser feel than a fine merino, but it isn't itchy or scratchy. This is the same wool used in Steiner school craft lessons, where children make wearable pieces like scarves, ponchos and beanies from it.

What age is this yarn suitable for?
Any age. In a Steiner school setting, it's the wool kindergarten children use to learn finger-knitting, and the same wool they move on to knit, weave and crochet with in later years.

How do I care for and wash this wool?
Cold hand wash with a gentle wool wash detergent is recommended.

How much yarn do I need for a project?
16 ply wool like this works well on 6–8mm knitting needles, or at around 4 ends per inch for weaving. A 50g ball goes further for finger-knitting and small weaving projects than it does for a full knitted garment, so for anything larger like a scarf or beanie, you'll likely need a few balls.

What's the difference between this and the rainbow multi-coloured yarn?
This yarn comes in solid, single colours, ball to ball. The rainbow yarn is variegated, so you get a mix of colours within the one ball, which suits a more playful, multicoloured project.

Do you sell knitting needles or crochet hooks to go with this yarn?
Yes, see below to get started.

You can get started on your knitting journey using our Bamboo Knitting Needles, or get busy crocheting with our Crochet Hooks.

Meet the Maker — Mollydale Yarns

Mollydale Yarns is run by Nicola and Evie, a mother-and-daughter team based in country NSW. Evie's own experience at the Armidale Waldorf School gave her a lasting appreciation for handcraft and natural materials, and that's the thinking behind everything Mollydale makes. They've supplied hand-dyed Perendale wool to Steiner schools across Australia for 16 years.

The wool is Australian and New Zealand Perendale, spun in New Zealand close to where it's grown. Perendale sheep are naturally resistant to flystrike, so the wool is non-mulesed by nature, not just by certification.

Each skein is hand-dyed in small batches by Nicola and Evie, working from lightest colours to darkest so their harvested rainwater can be reused before it's refreshed. Their dye house runs on solar and gas power, and every skein is air-dried outdoors in dappled shade to keep the colour and softness intact.
